Order and chaos

It's all in your mind

If you sense a pattern moving right or left, up or down - it's an illusion.
If you sense a pattern starting ordered and gradually becoming chaotic,
this is also an illusion. In fact, the pattern itself is an illusion...

There are basically three levels in this animated image:

You may see one large square image, but actually it is 4 minor squares combined,
All 4 are identical, thus evolving with the same speed and in the same direction.

Each minor square is composed of 100 small squares, arranged as 10 times 10.
The whole image is therefore 4 times 10 times 10, a total of 400 small squares.

Each small square change its state each second, from on to off to on to off...
Each small square keeps blinking with the same speed, and they're all alike.
Almost, because there is 1/100 second difference between two neighbors.
This means the first blinks every second, and the last blinks every second second.

Nevertheless, this is an image composed of elements that never move or evolve.
How does the sum of these result in an image continually moving and evolving..?
